About this work

A grey wash watercolor shows a tall brown windmill with its sails at rest, rising above a cluster of low houses with red roofs along the water's edge. A bridge spans the still canal on the right under a heavy, cloudy sky, and the water reflects the dark bank and buildings. Jacob Maris made this drawing in 1877.
