About this work

A warm, reddish-toned painting shows a tall bearded man in a dark cloak embraced by a woman in a pale robe, while a younger figure clasps him from behind. Around them, kneeling and seated people, a mother with a small child, camels, and palm trees stretch across a sandy plain beneath a hazy sky, with classical ruins at left. The work is attributed to Henry Lejeune and dated 1847, held in the Royal Collection.
