About this work
A young man with long curling dark hair stands in polished steel armour, resting one hand on a gilded baton and the other on his hip. A plumed or gleaming helmet rests on a carved stone pedestal beside him, and a blue-ribboned lace collar frames his face against a dark, rocky backdrop with a tree at left. This painting, titled William III (1650-1702) when Prince of Orange, was made by Adriaen Hanneman in 1664 and is held by the Royal Collection.
