About this work

A wide battlefield composition shows soldiers hauling a cannon across a dark hillside in the foreground while cavalry and mounted officers move among them. Smoke drifts over a distant town with a tall church spire, and a torn flag rises from the ridge at right. Georg Philipp Rugendas the Elder painted this work in 1690, and it is held in the Royal Collection.
