About this work

The painting shows the young woman Polyxena kneeling bare-shouldered on a cushion while a bearded priest in a blue robe raises a hand above her head, surrounded by armoured soldiers and a seated crowned king. A ghostly armoured figure floats in dark clouds above the scene, and an equestrian statue stands on a pedestal at left. Sebastiano Ricci painted this work in 1726, and it is held by the Royal Collection.
