About this work

This 1850 painting by John Callcott Horsley, held by the Royal Collection, shows a pastoral scene with a contrast between two central women: one in a red gown with a laurel wreath, the other in a dark hooded robe with lowered eyes. Behind them, a group of dancing figures plays a tambourine beneath an autumn tree, with a satyr-like figure at the lower left and a wide landscape opening toward the sea.
