About this work

The Memorial of Lord Darnley by Livinus de Vogelaare, dated 1567, shows a kneeling family in black mourning dress before a gilded tomb effigy of a reclining man in armour, with a crowned young boy in ermine-trimmed robes kneeling in the foreground. Heraldic banners hang in a dark church interior, and a crucified Christ stands on a draped altar at left, while a framed battle scene hangs beside it. Inscribed scrolls rise from the figures, carrying Latin prayers.
