About this work
This oil painting shows a young dairymaid in a red bodice standing among a brown-and-white cow, a brown cow, and several sheep on a dirt track beside a dead tree. A reclining spotted cow and distant grazing cattle sit near a stretch of water under a large cumulus sky. William Shayer painted this rural scene in 1845, and it is held in the Royal Collection.
