About this work

A dim, vaulted stone interior holds a group of seated men in period dress, several of them chained and grouped on straw-covered ground, with armored guards standing in the shadowed archways. Small details such as the metal dish and iron fetters on the floor reinforce the scene of confinement. This oil painting by Firmin Bouvy is held in the Royal Collection.
