About this work

A broad landscape shows a group of horses grazing and standing in a tree-lined park, with several figures in period dress attending them in the foreground. A carriage travels along a path at left, and a large castle with towers rises on a distant hill under a partly cloudy sky. This is 'The Duke of Cumberland visiting his stud', painted by Sawrey Gilpin in 1764 and held by the Royal Collection.
