About this work
A reclining winged figure rests in a pale shell-like cradle among twining morning glory vines and pink honeysuckle, set against a large pale moon and a soft blue sky. The lunette-shaped painting is framed in gilded wood, and the composition gives the figure a dreamlike, airborne quality. The painting is titled Ariel, was made by H. J. Townsend, and is dated 1845.
