About this work

A large painting of a ceremonial service in a Gothic cathedral nave, with clergy in embroidered vestments and richly dressed figures in uniforms and gowns filling the floor and galleries. The view carries the viewer down the long aisle beneath pointed arches, with a red-draped gallery on the right and gilded metalwork in the centre. This is William Ewart Lockhart's 1890 painting of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Service at Westminster Abbey on 21 June 1887, held in the Royal Collection.
