About this work

A painted harbour scene shows a ruined classical triumphal arch on the left, with workers, merchants and laden pack animals on the quay. An obelisk, a domed church and several masted ships with billowing sails rise along the water under a dramatic sky. This caprice view, A Caprice View of a Harbour, was painted by Luca Carlevarijs in 1710 and is held in the Royal Collection.
