About this work

Two monochrome ink landscapes are mounted as lobed, cartouche-shaped panels on a gold-patterned silk hanging scroll. The upper scene shows a pine clinging to rocky slopes beneath peaked mountains, with a tiny figure on a path, while the lower scene shows a twisted pine above a misty lake and layered hills. The work is attributed to Sesshū Tōyō and is held by the Princeton University Art Museum.
