About this work
A monochrome drawing in grey wash and white highlights shows soldiers in a smoke-filled street, with a figure supported in the arms of a comrade at center. Ruined buildings, a tattered flag, and fallen bodies on the cobblestones evoke the aftermath of battle. The work is signed and dated 1871 by Emile Antoine Bayard and is held at the Musée Carnavalet, Paris.
