About this work
A colourful lithographic theatre poster advertises the Théâtre du Châtelet production of Germinal, a five-act play in twelve scenes by Émile Zola, dated 1888. In the foreground a haggard man and a woman in a red headscarf and striped stockings stand before a scene of a mining town with a brick tower, a smokestack, and a crowd of workers, while below miners hack at coal beside a harnessed horse pulling a cart.
