About this work
A watercolour and pen drawing by John Rubens Smith, dated 1814, titled Britons rejoice, rejoice, rejoice. Two allegorical female figures in helmets stand before a sunburst and a throne, while two winged figures unfurl a French tricolour and a red banner beneath a handwritten proclamation of peace, commerce and industry. Corinthian columns and stone steps frame the composition, with shields inscribed Equitas and Libertas at the sides.
