About this work
A colored political cartoon shows figures in a tug of war over a rope labeled trade supremacy, with one team pulling against a gate marked trade restriction and the other pulling toward a flag reading open door policy. Pagodas, a fortified wall, and distant mountains by the sea frame the scene. The print was made by Udo Keppler in 1898.
