About this work
A colored lithographic cartoon by Udo Keppler from 1901 shows a tall Uncle Sam figure in striped trousers and a tailcoat, gesturing toward a building labeled 'The World's Department Store: The Best Goods for the Least Money.' A crowd rushes toward the store while a second group of agitated figures gathers on a hill at upper right, and steamships with smoke rise beside a building marked 'Foreign Trade.'
