About this work
A lithographic caricature shows a bearded man in dark clothing standing on a drum-like pedestal labeled Russia, with his arms behind his back. Above him a robed allegorical figure wearing a laurel wreath, labeled Spirit of Civilization, points downward against a radiant sunburst. A crowd of caricatured onlookers in varied national dress gazes up at the figure on the pedestal. The work is attributed to Udo Keppler and dated 1903.
