About this work
A caricature shows a heavyset, partly nude man in red shorts labeled with tariff interests, hesitantly wading into a calm lake with a pained expression. Mountains rise in the misty background, and a discarded fur-trimmed coat marked High Protection hangs from a hook labeled Congress on the shore. Udo Keppler's 1913 print, titled Cold mornings in September, uses this satirical scene to comment on tariff policy.
