About this work
This 1896 colour print by Udo Keppler, titled A noisy mob; but the sound money police are closing in on them, shows a crowd of agitators in a city street surrounded by uniformed police carrying batons. A man in a striped suit sits on a chair held aloft by the crowd beneath a red banner, while signs such as Down with Supreme Court and Down with Property Holders appear among the protesters. Bank and building association signs line the street, and the composition reads as a satirical political cartoon.
