About this work
A 1902 print by Udo Keppler titled "A false alarm on the fourth" shows Uncle Sam in striped trousers standing before the Capitol dome while children set off firecrackers and fire toy pistols around him, each labeled for a state or territory such as Texas, Alaska, New York and Porto Rico. At right, a winged figure labeled "Peace" with a dove carrying an olive branch looks on calmly as the noisy celebration continues.
