About this work
A chromolithographic plate titled Part of the Milky Way shows a dense, luminous band of stars and nebulous haze rising diagonally across a dark green night sky. A dark rocky outcrop on the left and a silhouetted sailing ship on the calm horizon anchor the composition at the bottom. The work is by Étienne Léopold Trouvelot and dates from 1881-1882.
