About this work
A woodblock print from Imao Keinen's 1891 Keinen kachō gafu series, plate 35, shows a songbird with a black head and blue-gray back perched near a textured tree trunk. Sprigs of red berries, yellowing and reddish leaves, and clusters of pale mushrooms fill the lower and right sides of the composition, with fine grass strokes across the ground. The print is hand-colored in soft tones against a cream background.
