About this work
A dense forest of gnarled, twisted tree trunks fills the composition, rendered in muted grey and ochre tones with fine stippled shading. A pale, partly hidden figure appears at the right edge among the trunks. The work is titled Knotty trunks, is attributed to Léon Spilliaert, and is dated 1938.
