About this work

A black and white woodcut shows several figures in a tight composition, with a standing man at left and another at right, a small figure in the upper center, and a kneeling figure at lower right against a patterned ground. The bold carved outlines and strong black and white contrast define the forms. The print is titled Flogging (Prelude to the Lynching), by Helen West Heller, dated 1927.
