About this work

A hand-colored lithograph by Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev, dated 1849 to 1853, shows the Nail of the Lord and the lid of its reliquary casket from the Dormition Cathedral in Moscow. A dark iron nail stands at left beside a gilded, jewel-studded cross and a domed casket decorated with rubies, sapphires, emeralds and winged cherub heads. A round lid with engraved markings and a chain lies below, with the Cyrillic caption printed beneath.
