About this work

This chromolithographic plate shows a pair of tall arched wooden doors richly decorated with gilded filigree and floral scrollwork on a blue ground. Small framed panels with pale centers and onion-dome finials are set into the doors, and a Cyrillic inscription band runs along the base. The print is credited to Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev and dated 1849-1853, and its title identifies the doors as the royal entrance of the former Savva monastery near Tver, established under Tsar Ioann Vasil'evich IV in 1561.
