About this work

A printed plate presents two framed half-length portraits, numbered 1 and 2, on a cream sheet. The first figure wears richly embroidered gold vestments with jeweled ornaments and a blue mantle, while the second wears a dark fur-trimmed cloak, a fur hat, and holds a staff. The Russian caption identifies the subjects as Patriarch Filaret Nikitich and the nun Martha Ioannovna, drawn by Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev, dated 1849-1853.
