About this work
This hand-colored lithographic plate, numbered 86 in its series, presents several ceremonial maces and their decorative components arranged across the sheet. The left example shows an enameled gold shaft with a faceted silver head, the centre example is richly gilded and set with turquoise-like cabochons, and the right example has a fluted silver head with a striated shaft. The Russian inscriptions identify the objects as a Turkish mace, the mace of Boyar Prince V.M. Lykov, and a steel mace. The print is attributed to Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev and dated 1849-1853.
