About this work
A chromolithographic plate shows a gilded and jeweled mitre or hat, viewed from the side and from above, with pearl borders, red and blue gemstones, and filigree ornament. A golden cross rises from the crown, and small icon-like panels of saints appear on the sides, with additional ornamental details shown in the margins. The plate is titled as a gift from Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich and Tsaritsa Maria Il'inichna to Patriarch Nikon in 1652, and is attributed to Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev, dated 1849-1853.
