About this work

A chromolithographed plate shows two tall, patterned church candles mounted on gilded bases with lion-shaped feet. The left candle is shown with its top fitted with a circular metal holder, while the right candle is shown with its cap removed and a cross motif and Cyrillic inscription visible on its decorated sleeve. The plate is numbered 73 and labeled as part of the first division, with a caption in Russian identifying the candles as old wax candles kept in a Moscow church. The work is attributed to Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev and dated 1849-1853.
