About this work
A black-and-white etching by Marc Gonthier, dated 1947, shows a nude or nearly nude body sprawled across a churned, barren ground strewn with barbed wire and wooden stakes. A second figure lies partly buried in the background, and a helmet rests near the lower left. Dashed diagonal lines and a clouded sky above suggest a nocturnal or stormy scene.
