About this work

A crowd of peasants in period dress gathers in a village square beneath a large crucifix, while a man in a long grey coat raises his arm toward them from a stone base. A flag with red, yellow and black bands is held aloft, and a church tower rises behind the houses. The chromolithograph, published by the Davids-Fonds in 1898 by Louis Geens, depicts the beginning of the peasant uprising of October 1798.
