About this work
A nude male figure strides forward in the lower center of the composition, surrounded by a dense, scribbled mass of shadowy figures that fill the dark background. The crayon-like hatching and tonal contrast create a sense of a crowded, nocturnal underworld. Max Beckmann made this print in 1909, and it is titled Orpheus in the Underworld.
