About this work
A colour lithograph shows a crowd of armoured knights and clergy in a stone arcade, with a bearded bishop holding a crozier and a central figure in a white tunic and gold armour extending his hands. Red-cross banners and palm fronds mark the procession, reflecting the proclamation of Godfrey of Bouillon as King of Jerusalem in 1099. The caption beneath cites his refusal of a gold crown where the King of kings wore a crown of thorns.
