About this work
Walter Crane's pen-and-ink illustration shows two young men in period dress exchanging a handshake in an arched courtyard, with doves and a potted plant beside them and a bell tower in the background. The lower margin carries the dialogue lines spoken by Proteus and Valentine and the scene marker for Act I, Scene 1.
