About this work
This engraved print shows a rectangular pillar encrusted with shells and rockwork, with a shell-shaped marble basin projecting from its front and a carved mask above a monogram cartouche. Two grotesque half-human figures flank the central panel, and the composition is captioned in French and Latin as from the grotto at Versailles. The print is attributed to Jean Le Pautre and dated 1673.
