About this work
Grandville's 1833 print Etrennes au peuple (New Year's gifts for the people) shows a startled man in a dark coat and light trousers recoiling beneath a storm of objects. Keys, chains, shoes, hats, a pistol and an instrument rain down, while newspaper titles and a row of city buildings fill the background, and a scatter of papers lies at his feet.
