About this work
This etching titled Répétition à l’Opéra by Paul Renouard, dated 1890, shows a large group of dancers in pale dresses moving in a sweeping circle beneath bright stage lights. A conductor in dark clothing stands above them with arms outstretched and a baton raised, while a single dancer is lifted in the upper left corner. The dense, blurred movement and strong contrasts of light and shadow convey the energy of a rehearsal.
