About this work
A lithographic political cartoon by Udo Keppler, titled The Pit and the Pendulum and dated 1909, shows a figure labeled Consumer bound to a wooden table. A large swinging pendulum labeled Cost of Living, fitted with a crescent blade, descends toward the bound man, while a stone pit lies below him. The drawing uses dense crosshatched shading to build the dark background and the swinging motion.
