About this work
A central oval vignette shows a nurse seated beside a bearded soldier resting in a hospital bed, with other patients visible in the background. Four smaller roundels frame the scene, depicting women tending soldiers on the battlefield, in the hospital, sewing in a parlor, and at a fair, all within a laurel wreath labeled Our Heroines. This 1864 print by Thomas Nast honors women's wartime service with the United States Sanitary Commission.
