About this work
A monochrome woodblock print shows several steam warships moving across dark water at night, with smoke rising from their funnels. The largest vessel in the foreground has masts, rigging, a gun turret, and small figures of sailors on deck, while smaller ships and distant mountains appear to the left and right. The title, printed in Japanese at the top, identifies it as part of the series Picture Scroll of Distinguished Service, by Takahashi Shōtei, dated 1897.
