About this work

A pen and ink drawing shows a man in a tunic and hose drawing a bow skyward, with arrows scattered at his feet beside a crossbow-like object. A church with a spire, hills and trees fill the landscape, while a crescent moon, a sun with a face, stars and clouds fill the sky above. A Latin inscription below the scene reads that one who shoots at heaven labors in vain, as arrows loosed upward often fall back on the shooter. This anonymous French work is dated c. 1512/1515 and held by the National Gallery of Art.
