About this work

This pen and ink drawing with brown and grey wash shows a frontal elevation of a tiered catafalque with stepped bases, fluted pilasters, and a circular wreath medallion framed by an arched cornice. Urn finials, swags, and scroll brackets decorate the upper stages, and construction lines are visible throughout. The sheet is catalogued as Design for a Catafalque, an anonymous French work from 1700 in the National Gallery of Art.
