About this work

A hand-colored engraving shows a commander seated on a raised platform beneath a draped canopy, questioning a bearded man while armed soldiers stand nearby. On the right, the same captive is bound to a tree before a walled town with a bridge over a river. French inscriptions above and below the scene describe the interrogation of Achior about the strength of the people of Israel and his subsequent binding to a tree. The work is an anonymous French print from about 1575 held by the National Gallery of Art.
