About this work

This pen and wash drawing shows a winged figure with a grotesque bearded face and curling hair standing on a scrolled pedestal, above a cluster of tumbling nude figures amid acanthus foliage. The sheet bears a handwritten Italian inscription at the top addressing a palace and a canon and abbot in Padua. The work is attributed to an anonymous Italian artist of the 17th or 18th century and is held by the National Gallery of Art.
