About this work
A red chalk drawing on grey-tan paper shows a woman seated in a high-backed chair, turned slightly to the side with her hands resting in her lap. The loose, sketched lines of her head cap, bodice, and voluminous skirt suggest a study of costume and posture. This anonymous French work is dated possibly c. 1740 and is held by the National Gallery of Art.
