About this work
A reddish-brown ink and wash drawing shows a nude female figure embracing a bearded male figure reclining among clouds and forge equipment. Small putti and winged cherubs float or play above and beside them, with a sketched anvil and tools in the foreground. The work is catalogued as Venus at the Forge of Vulcan by an anonymous French artist of the 18th century, held by the National Gallery of Art.
